Enrolment into the Wesley Mission Queensland (WMQ) School-based Traineeship Program will kick-start a career in the healthcare industry and provide an opportunity to learn vital, real-life workplace skills in hands-on environment.
Work in aged, community, and disability care is unique, rewarding, and challenging. The skills you gain equip you to excel in care worker roles at WMQ, ensuring success in the workplace. Through their school-based traineeship employment, Year 11 students preparing for work in these sectors are supported and supervised in workplaces while they complete on-the-job training to become a confident and competent worker.

Participating in the Wesley Mission School Based Traineeship program equips students with essential skills and knowledge. This program opens doors to exciting career pathways in the health and community services sector. To be eligible for this program students must:
Be enrolled in a Queensland Secondary School in Year 11, 2025 (the year commencing the Deadly Start Program)
Have not completed a HLT232215 Certificate II in Health Support Services or HLT33115 Certificate III in Health Services Assistance previously
Have not completed or is enrolled currently in a School-Based Traineeship
Willing to attend Connect ‘n’ Grow Health Hub or Employment 1-day per week for 18-months.

The Wesley Mission School Based Traineeship Program offers students practical experience in aged care workplaces. It combines classroom learning with hands-on training in various community service roles. This program helps students gain valuable skills and qualifications while still in school.
This program is only eligible for Year 11 students attending a Queensland Secondary School who is interested in pursuing a career in Health and Community Services. We encourage all eligible students to take advantage of this opportunity.
The Wesley Mission program typically spans across an 18-month period, where they will be required to complete a minimum of 375 hours of paid work as part of their traineeship. The School-Based Traineeship (SBT) is designed to equip students with practical skills and industry knowledge while they work towards their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). As part of the SBT program, each trainee will be a temporary part-time employee, gaining valuable on-the-job experience in the healthcare sector.
Here’s what the 18-month plan looks like across the two-years:
Semester 1, 2025:
Students will begin with the HLT23221 Certificate II in Health Support Services, delivered 1-day per week during Terms 1 and 2. This portion of the course is completed at a Connect 'n' Grow Health Hub, a School Health Hub, or an Employer Health Hub. VETiS Funding is available.
Traineeship Phase (12-Month Period, typically July, 2025 to June, 2026):
After successfully completing the HLT23221 Certificate II in Health Support Services, students will enter the School-Based Traineeship (SBT) phase, working 1-day per week under the supervision of a Line Manager in one of the available hospital or healthcare locations.
Trainees must complete 375 hours (or 50 days) of paid work experience over the 12 months, allowing them to apply classroom learning in real-world healthcare environments.
Students will be guided and supervised by a Line Manager who will oversee their practical tasks and competency progress.
Students who complete the program will earn the nationally recognised qualifications, HLT23221 Certificate II in Health Support Services and the HLT33115 Certificate III in Health Services Assistance. These qualifications enhance their employability and provide a strong foundation for further education. Graduates are equipped with skills that are highly valued in the workforce.
