In Queensland, employers who engage school-based trainees have several responsibilities to ensure the success and well-being of the trainees. These responsibilities include:

  1. Providing a safe working environment: Employers must ensure that the workplace is safe and free from hazards, in compliance with occupational health and safety regulations.

  2. Offering appropriate training and supervision: Employers are responsible for providing trainees with adequate training and supervision to help them develop the skills necessary to perform their job duties effectively.

  3. Supporting education requirements: Employers must work in partnership with the trainee’s school to accommodate their educational commitments and ensure that they can balance work and study effectively.

  4. Paying wages and entitlements: Employers must pay trainees at least the relevant minimum wage and provide entitlements such as leave and allowances as per the relevant industrial award or agreement.

  5. Monitoring progress and providing feedback: Employers should regularly monitor the trainee’s progress, provide constructive feedback, and offer opportunities for learning and development.

  6. Complying with legal and contractual obligations: Employers must adhere to all relevant laws, regulations, and contractual agreements related to employing school-based trainees.
