School Based Traineeship
Boosting the Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander Healthcare Workforce
The Deadly Start Program, In partnership with Queensland Health’s Equity Strategy aims to provide culturally supportive pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to kickstart their career in healthcare in roles including nursing, midwifery, oral health and allied health. We are proud to the the Training Provider in partnership with Queensland Health with training scheduled to take place across multiple locations in Queensland.
By completing the HLT23221 Certificate II in Health Support Services during the first six months, students then become eligible to progress into a hospital-based traineeship and earn while they learn, working towards their HLT33115 Certificate III in Health Services Assistance.
Those students that are offered a traineeship as part of the Deadly Start Program can expect to earn a wage, train towards a nationally recognised qualification and study towards their Queensland Certificate of Education at the same time. Students who successfully complete and show a desire to continue work in the industry, may be offered the opportunity for further ongoing employment upon Graduation of Year 12.

Eligibility for the Deadly Start Program
The Deadly Start program offers cultural support and guidance, ensuring students feel connected and empowered. With a focus on career pathways, participants gain essential skills that pave the way for future success. To be eligible for this program students must:
Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
Be enrolled in a Queensland Secondary School in Year 11, 2025 (the year commencing the Deadly Start Program)
Have not completed a HLT232215 Certificate II in Health Support Services or HLT33115 Certificate III in Health Services Assistance previously
Have not completed or is enrolled currently in a School-Based Traineeship
Willing to attend Connect ‘n’ Grow Health Hub or Employment 1-day per week for 18-months.

The Deadly Start program, which is a commitment from Queensland Health’s Equity Strategy aims to provide students a head start in healthcare in roles including nursing, midwifery, oral health and allied health. Connect ‘n’ Grow partnered with Queensland Health in 2022, with opportunities for students whom identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander to attend our Connect n Grow Health Hubs and gain valuable skills and as well as hands on learning.
This program is only eligible for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students attending a Queensland Secondary School who is interested in pursuing a career in Health and Community Services. The program is tailored to support students from diverse backgrounds. We encourage all eligible students to take advantage of this opportunity.
The Deadly Start program typically spans across an 18-month period, where they will be required to complete a minimum of 375 hours of paid work as part of their traineeship. The School-Based Traineeship (SBT) is designed to equip students with practical skills and industry knowledge while they work towards their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). As part of the SBT program, each trainee will be a temporary part-time employee, gaining valuable on-the-job experience in the healthcare sector.
Here’s what the 18-month plan looks like across the two-years:
Semester 1, 2025:
Students will begin with the HLT23221 Certificate II in Health Support Services, delivered 1-day per week during Terms 1 and 2. This portion of the course is completed at a Connect 'n' Grow Health Hub, a School Health Hub, or an Employer Health Hub. VETiS Funding is available.
Traineeship Phase (12-Month Period, typically July, 2025 to June, 2026):
After successfully completing the HLT23221 Certificate II in Health Support Services, students will enter the School-Based Traineeship (SBT) phase, working 1-day per week under the supervision of a Line Manager in one of the available hospital or healthcare locations.
Trainees must complete 375 hours (or 50 days) of paid work experience over the 12 months, allowing them to apply classroom learning in real-world healthcare environments.
Students will be guided and supervised by a Line Manager who will oversee their practical tasks and competency progress.
Students who complete the program will earn the nationally recognised qualifications, HLT23221 Certificate II in Health Support Services and the HLT33115 Certificate III in Health Services Assistance. These qualifications enhance their employability and provide a strong foundation for further education. Graduates are equipped with skills that are highly valued in the workforce.
This program is tailored specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, and cultural mentorship is provided throughout the 18-month traineeship. During the Certificate II, individual student profiles will be developed to support traineeship placement options suited to their personal skills, interests and career desires across all Queensland Public Hospitals. Throughout their traineeship students will be supported by the Deadly Start Team, Connect ‘n’ Grow and Seed Foundation Australia to ensure they are set up for success and ultimately continue a career in healthcare.
